Just tried to install ProFTPD with MySQL support - none of the
MySQL mirrors seems to be responding, and it therefore won't install.
Anyway, didn't notice that the ProFTPD version is bit outdated
until I saw the the mysql4 variant. Is the port broken/left/
outdated or is my installation broken somehow? I don't really want
nor need MySQL4, but I don't know how to change that or if it's
even possible ;)

Maybe there was a temporary network issue. I was able to fetch
mysql-4.1.22.tar.gz successfully from the first mirror.
It looks like the proftpd port only depends on the mysql4 port if you
select proftpd's +mysql4 variant. If you don't want mysql4 support in
proftpd, don't select its +mysql4 variant.
If you're saying you want mysql5 support instead of mysql4 support,
you should file an enhancement request ticket against proftpd and
assign (or Cc) it to the maintainer of the proftpd port. "port info
proftpd" tells you who that is.
You should file a separate port update ticket to request that the
port be updated to the current version.
