$ sudo port install foo
#vs.
$sudo port install foo +darwin_*

The darwin_*, i386, powerpc and macosx variants are all auto-selected for you based on your computer's OS and processor architecture. You do not need to (and should not) select these variants manually. I'd be in favor of not printing them in the "port variants" commands at all, but for now, they are shown there. Just ignore them. MacPorts will do the right thing automatically.
