Thanks so much, Ryan. Moving /usr/local to /usr/local-off did the trick. I'll move the stuff I still need from /usr/local-off over to /opt/local.

Just to make sure: Don't manually move any files from /usr/local-off into /opt/local; instead, find whatever software it is that you want using "port search" and then install it using "sudo port install".
