Did you perhaps install MacPorts at some time in the past, and then uninstall it incompletely, and now install MacPorts again on top of it, such that although the files from ports you installed on your original MacPorts are still there, your new MacPorts doesn't know about them? If so, you may want to properly uninstall MacPorts, then reinstall. Uninstall instructions are in the FAQ:
