My question is "why doesn't port outdated show that php5 is now at 5.3"?

Is your portindex up to date? Try "sudo port sync"; is it still the same?
Do you have a local portindex that might be overriding ours?
Or do you have a local php5 portfile that might be overriding ours?

ad...@x:admin:121 $ sudo port sync
ad...@x:admin:122 $ port outdated
No installed ports are outdated.

That is strange indeed.

the only 'portindex' that I can find is

 /opt/local/bin/portindex

I should be more precise: it's spelled "PortIndex" and it lives at the root of your ports tree, so:

/opt/local/var/macports/sources/rsync.macports.org/release/ports/ PortIndex

It should be getting updated along with everything else in your ports tree when you sync or selfupdate.
