both set and fset to create shortcuts to no avail - they all
complain that special is unknown. Does anyone have any ideas how I
might do this?
I thought I could get this streamlined enough to replace iCal, but
this color business is a pain.

Unfortunately it's not going smoothly.)
I'm not familiar with that software; you might want to ask in a
support venue dedicated to that software.
A good idea, but I actually gave up before my subscription came back
(and there was zip in their archives). I finally got Smultron
snippets working which dodged the problem by substituting a 2-stroke
short-cut for the clunkiness.
