I just did this under 1.8:
sudo port -d install mysql5 +server
It went ahead and did it's thing. Should it not have hit the
variant server description "Obsolete; install ${mysql}-server port
instead" {
pre-configure {
ui_msg "The +server variant is obsolete. Please install the $
{mysql}-server port instead."
}
}
