I believe that part is just editing the "specs" file, so it should actually
be gcc-version-agnostic.  Having to ship our own gc as part of the MacPorts
base would still be annoying, though.

(hmmm... or can you easily point gcc to a different specs file?  Then we use
Apple's gcc with a modified specs file, and then the base just makes sure
said specs file is updated with respect to Apple's own (stat() when the port
command is run; not like another one would be noticed).
