Hello Jasper, I just installed gedit to try this myself. But it works out of the box for me. I even disabled my ~/.gtkrc-2.0 to rule out any configuration issues.
I get the same warnings as you at startup, but that is common for Gtk+ based programs and should not be a problem: ---snip--- $ gedit Xlib: extension "RANDR" missing on display "/tmp/launch-MXMowk/org.macosforge.xquartz:0". ** (gedit:99784): WARNING **: Could not load theme icon gtk-home: Icon 'gtk-home' not present in theme (gedit:99784): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: g_object_unref: assertion `G_IS_OBJECT (object)' failed ** (gedit:99784): WARNING **: Could not load theme icon system-file-manager: Icon 'system-file-manager' not present in theme ---snap--- Apparently the icon can be found somewhere on my system finally. If this is really related to the "system-file-manager" icon, the only files I have with this name would be in the directories "/opt/local/share/icons/gnome/*/apps/system-file-manager.png". But gedit even works for me if I deactivate the gnome-icon-theme port, which provides these icons. I am a bit lost here and don't know how to help you further...
