This is called the "select" feature in MacPorts.

Use "port help select" to learn more.

Try commands like "port select --list gcc" and "sudo port select --set gcc 
mp-gcc45".

To undo, use "sudo port select --set gcc none".

The "select" feature is available for some other ports as well, typically those 
that have multiple versions available (for example python).
