MacPorts has so much more functionality than the standard Mac OS X version:

bash-4.2$ port variants postfix
postfix has the variants:
   dovecot_sasl: add Dovecot SASL support
   ldap: add ldap support via openldap
   mysql5: add mysql support via mysql5
   pcre: add pcre support
   postgresql83: add postgresql support via postgresql83
     * conflicts with postgresql84 postgresql90
