That is strange. IIRC macports won't use a tar command it installs, and 10.7 
should have installed a useable tar command.

You can install from the installer (as the Migration instructions recommend 
https://trac.macports.org/wiki/Migration)

We probably need to see the full output of the command (with that -v flag) in 
order to help.
