You do not need any such alias. There should be no need to routinely manually 
start mysqld. Once everything is working, let launchd start it for you ("sudo 
port load mysql5-server"). Until everything is working, you can manually start 
mysqld_safe5.

You're supposed to start it as the _mysql user, not as the root user.
