MacPorts can swap between installed versions of a port while considering 
variants and version together, but you have to ask it to do so manually. Since 
variants are considered during this, if there's a specific set other than the 
default you must specify it. It's a good habit to always use all the variants 
when activating/deactivating ports:

sudo port activate cairo @1.12.0_0+quartz+universal+x11
