P.S.  The other (or rest of) the thread here is talking about +quartz vs.
+x11; this is not relevant to XQuartz, which qualifies as +x11 for the
purposes of that discussion.  +quartz means native, non-X11-protocol-based.
 (The confusing naming is actually appropriate but regrettable.)
