/opt/local/etc/macports. Yes, if you want to change the sources, then you edit 
sources.conf. sources.conf.default shows you what the defaults are; you should 
not edit .default files unless you want to confuse yourself later.

Or you can use "sudo" in front of your command-line editor to gain the 
necessary privileges (e.g. if you use vi, "sudo vi sources.conf"). Or you can 
use a GUI editor that prompts you for an admin account password when editing 
files you wouldn't otherwise be allowed to change; TextWrangler and TextMate 
both do this, for example.
