As others have said, it'd probably end up being counter productive trying to use MacPorts on Linux. I use Fedora, Ubuntu, Debian & CentOS & find by adding the extra repos (rpmforge & the like), you're covered for most things. Also, you can add repo keys to appropriate extra software (frowned on by some). If not, the old fashioned way of installing via a tarball is pretty much the way to go. Linux is pretty much set up out the box to do this (after installing 'Development Tools' or build-essential & so on) so it's usually no sweat.
