For all the same reasons you would use MacPorts for anything else. A 
consistent, self contained set of executables installed under /opt/local, with 
all dependencies satisfied in a way that does not clobber other software.

Personally, I would ask why wouldn't you use MacPorts for it ?

Personally I was able to install the 3.0.0 from macports without an issue, on 
OSX 10.8. This sounds like a 10.6 issue that hopefully can be resolved.
