MacPorts does not use your PATH. It uses a sanitized path, specified in the 
binpath variable in macports.conf.

MacPorts usually uses a compiler provided by the Xcode command line tools, 
unless a port has a specific reason to use a different compiler, in which case 
the port will specify a specific compiler. Ports will never use just “gcc”.

Michael suggested you install the octave port with the variants you need/want. 
You appear to have been trying to install the octave port with its +gcc45 
variant. I’m suggesting you try it’s +gcc48 variant instead.
