I think I found the culprit. The merger_arch_compiler and/or merger_arch_flag
setting(s) must be 'yes'. I'm a bit surprised that those would modify the
commandlines generated by qmake, though. The description suggests that
merger_arch_compiler simply sets the compiler to `${CC} -arch ${arch}`, so I
wasn't expecting an effect if the variable is 'no' ...
