Oh, and maybe if you needed to create .bash_profile, then all your terminal settings were in .profile (including the PATH for MacPorts). I'd suggest you try removing ~/.bash_profile and adding the PATH="..." line at the end of ~/.profile . (Sorry for the double message, I first overlooked the .bash_profile thing.) Best wishes.
