It's no different than overriding any other Portfile variable at the command 
line, e.g. sudo port install configure.compiler=clang; that's not mentioned in 
the man page either. Should it be? The use of command line variable overrides 
should not be encouraged for end users, though it is something developers might 
need occasionally.
