Later in the mail you reference "macports-port" with "macports-ports" instead. Which one is it? Also, you need to run "portindex" inside of macports-ports. Just in case that you didn't do it already.
I usually use 'sudo port -d sync' that performs both the git pull in the correct area, and the subsequent portindex.
