Maybe I should have posted with the subject "Build vs Buy" rather than something as narrow as a networking library. I believe the discussion is valid, even if it were to be solely limited to aiding in the selection of a product/service. It's no different to picking a decent web host, payment provider, etc. as a foundation of the business.
Would be interesting to find out the criteria that other indie developers use, especially given our (typical) resource constraints, regarding third party libraries. How price sensitive are we? Is having access to the source code vital?
