The costs seem to vary from state to state. As I recall, CA has an annual fee for LLC of something like $900. The question is what benefit does an LLC offer you as a one man shop that a sole proprietorship does not. And is that worth handing over a decked out iPad?
I ask my accountant each year at tax time whether I should move up from sole proprietorship to LLC and he basically says what Kee stated. I'm still pretty much liable, so it's just additional paperwork. I think you're correct that state and local governments will usually require additional filings with them, even though you may not owe them any money. The bureaucracy machines need to be fed.
