FWIW, a T-Mobile Nokia 1660 I bought in the US during last WWDC failed to work 
when I brought it back to Brazil; a repair shop quoted me a price for 
resoldering a filter on the main board, and changing the device firmware, that 
was more expensive than getting a new, local one.

OTOH, I hear all the time from people that bring in iPhones from the US and 
they usually work after unlocking...
