I was in a similar position as you a few weeks ago when I switched to linode. However, I've not been a big fan of Google's spam filtering which I often find unreliable and can't really be configured. I ended up opting for FastMail (www.fastmail.fm) on the recommendation of a friend. I went with one of the family packages and it cost me $35 for the year for two IMAP accounts (I can have multiple aliases etc for free) and I get a lot more customisability over my email than Google offers. It is worth looking at as an alternative.
