If we're talking about paid-for software I wouldn't advertise the fact that it's a side project. When I read things like that as a customer, they turn me away. As a customer I'm not particularly interested in why you're not delivering that update that is overdue (due to bugs, due to promises or due to any other reason). Hearing it's because you have a day job and just don't have the time doesn't solve the issue. IMHO a good solution is not to commit to updates/fixes you know you can't deliver. That of course is much easier if the current release version is rock solid and doesn't make users wait for an update.
