Is there any way to hack on the Sparkle code to add an extra step before 
installing the update? Maybe what you could do is add in a checkbox and text 
field into the sparkle dialogue that checks the user's current version, and if 
they require an upgrade, add in a confirmation checkbox:

Default Folder [new version #] is a paid upgrade. <Buy now> <More information>

Continue and install this upgrade? [ ] Yes

Totally off the top of my head, but I don't think expecting users to read the 
release notes is prudent. User experience research has shown that the vast 
majority of people completely ignore the text that appears in dlalogues and 
immediately click on whatever button looks like the most likely to get rid of 
the dialogue, or they have a "OH SHINY" response and grab the download without 
reading.

Adding in a small roadblock might help; I've seen stuff like this work well in 
other projects.
