Reading-or-not issues aside, doesn't Sparkle allow for automatic upgrades?  In 
that case, users would suddenly be locked out of their paid-for program without 
any warning.  c.f. the Sparkle documentation at 
<http://wiki.github.com/andymatuschak/Sparkle/customization>:
