One important change to avoid being annoying is to make the update window a regular window. By default, Sparkle sets its window level to NSFloatingWindowLevel, which is really annoying because it means you slap a huge window in front of the user's nose even when you're in the background. I've fixed that in my branch (unless you're a faceless app, then you get it anyway), but somehow Andy's resisted merging that into his version, and I never got him to tell me why.
