A real photo platform is actually something I've been thinking about for years,
and it's been in the front of my mind again lately. I've resisted the urge to
start building/sharing prototypes, but once Geotagalog 2 is out I hope to
finally add this iron to the fire.

I'd like to build something that is more of an open source, photo-specific
repository designed to take care of the basics so client apps can focus on
providing their own specific, innovative ways to interact with photos. I'm
admittedly nervous that this kind of goal is easier said than done (OpenDoc?),
or that it wouldn't get enough momentum even if the architecture succeeds, but
to me it's worth a serious try.

This is probably getting off-topic, however. I'd be happy to discuss more
off-list, and if there's enough interest we could find the conversation its own
home.
