I'm frankly surprised that most of the discussion here has been about somewhat 
modest hardware discounts.

I would think that the prospect of an App Store model, including signed code, 
and Apple vetting and approval of products, as we see on the iPhone today, 
would be of greater concern.

To date, the Mac has been an open platform, but it would seem to me that all 
the scaffolding to make it a closed one is already in place, and it's difficult 
to argue that the closed iPhone business model hasn't been a wild success.
