It's the *origin* of the product tree. So was the classic Mac OS. Times change, product lines move on. Now iPhone OS is the root of the iPhone, iPod, and iPad product trees. There's only one product left that doesn't use their new OS…the assertion is that this one product line is going to buck the extremely strong trend they're setting forth? > and allows Apple to remain masters of their universe. Everybody seems to be missing my repeated statement that the release of a "Pro" iPhone OS version (and accompanying product) is a critical step along the way here. The question isn't what's happening today, it's what's happening tomorrow. > Then there's the huge investment in the pro market. Logic, Final Cut Pro, > etc.... Killing the mac would render that entire investment pointless. Is their investment in iLife, iWork, Mail, etc. pointless? They're moving to the new platform. That's the clear trend. > My guess is they've decided to renovate the downloads area and took it down > for a bit while they're doing it. Perhaps. Or, since the App Store is the new way to get programs onto Apple products—and the only way, for most of them—it's not as interesting to Apple anymore. Should it reappear in its previous prominent position, that would be a good indication of ongoing commitment to the Mac and its open nature. Obviously, I suspect we're not going to see that, but time will tell.
