About 3/4s of my traffic comes through my blog, mostly via Google, so I'll make
a few suggestions based on my own experience.

If your goal is primarily to increase traffic to your software then writing
about life as a developer could have limited appeal. In a way you're not
"pre-qualifying" the traffic; you are currently looking for people who are
interested in software development and controlling their shopping budget.

You might consider writing more targeted posts on shopping and budgeting, and
not try to cover software development as well. I think it would give your blog
wider appeal to a more relevant audience.

I noticed that your posts are very long. You could consider splitting them up
into smaller parts. Google places a high value on content freshness and
frequency of updates. 3 smaller posts make for more readable chunks (for
attention challenged people like me), and the more frequent posting increases
your visibility. If you use a site map lodged in Google webmaster your posts
should be indexed very quickly, and you will have more of those "long-tail"
entries for search traffic.

Networking with bloggers in the same "space" can be really beneficial. If you
read SEO / marketing style blogs the writers are always referring to each
other's posts, linking etc. It increases traffic all around and the incoming
links are also important for credibility with Google.
