Google’s automated English <-> German translation is horrible. I don’t know how other languages perform, but I can imagine that a lot of sentences will be hardly readable. I do not recommend automated translation tools for public use. You can easily check the quality by yourself: browse a (Google supported) foreign web site and translate it to English (you can even translate the translation back and then back again and look at the outcome).
