I ran two checkout landing pages for a while just to keep the coupon field out 
of view. It worked well for a small number of codes going out on an ad-hoc 
basis, with not a lot of extra effort.

Another thing that I tried for a few months was a small discount at the 
checkout for all buyers. An explanation of the discount and the coupon code 
were displayed above the coupon code field. 

I thought it interesting that about 20% of people didn't use the code despite 
it being displayed clearly. I don't think the discount affected revenue much 
either way (a few extra sales at a lower average price), but for the 80% who 
used the code it was something for nothing and would have generated some 
goodwill. Perhaps a win-win.
