I realized that. For example after a failed elilo boot like I described,
a boot using lilo that normally succeeds will fail. Both errors that I
described happen when I go straight from a fresh boot to the
corresponding menu option.

Could you give a bit more details how to do that? I have to define disk
mappings by hand for it to work, no?
