Using your version of coretemp.c, I get the following:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~/mbp/coretemp$ sudo ./coretemp
CPU 0: 40 °C
CPU 1: 40 °C

Admittedly this is just after coming out of sleep in an air-conditioned
room.

It works if you add the "-d ata" option as well. Using that:
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ sudo smartctl -d ata -a /dev/sda | grep Temperature
194 Temperature_Celsius     0x0022   036   052   000    Old_age   Always
-       36 (Lifetime Min/Max 0/17)
So, my HD temperature is 36 °C, with the highest recorded being 52 °C.

this is what I get on mac book pro 15.4:
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/usr/lib# smartctl -d ata -a /dev/sda |grep Temp
194 Temperature_Celsius     0x0022   100   100   000    Old_age   Always       -      44 (Lifetime Min/Max 23/55)

somehow, I don't believe those 100ºC ...

any clues to what might cause this ?
