Have you tried:
# rmmod appleir
# libhid-detach-device 05ac:8240
# modprobe appleir

I need to first remove appleir since it is loaded in the boot process
but the device is already attached to the HID driver.

So in my dmesg I have:
[...]
Probing IDE interface ide0...
usbcore: registered new driver appleir
drivers/usb/input/appleir.c: v1.1:USB Apple MacMini IR Receiver driver
Intel 82802 RNG detected
[...]
mtrr: no more MTRRs available
usbcore: deregistering driver appleir
usb 1-4: USB disconnect, address 4
input: Apple Mac mini infrared remote control driver as /class/input/input8
usbcore: registered new driver appleir
drivers/usb/input/appleir.c: v1.1:USB Apple MacMini IR Receiver driver
usb 1-4: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 8
[...]

Hope this helps.

Bye,
