With the 2.6.17.13 kernel, you *can* mount HFS+ partitions without explicitly turning off journalling from within OS X.
To backstep a little, I can't verify right now that my HFS+ partitions created under OS X are journaled, but I'm pretty sure they are. I mount my HFS+ filesystems with the option -o rw,force. It prints a warning, but I'm able to write to the filesystems with no data loss while reading under either OS.
