Using Julien Blache's mbpeventd package[1] (also available in Debian unstable) you can turn off the backlight of the MacBook's display (using Fn+F1). This doesn't exactly "turn off" the lcd head, but turns off its backlight what I suppose is the effect you want to achieve. The lcd panel stays dark even when using keyboard/mouse.
