hi guys. i've got a 15" MacBook Pro Core2Duo running Debian Etch,
Linux 2.6.18.7 with mactel-linux patches, rEFIt, and lilo. BootCamp is
not installed.

on sunday evening i got the keyboard backlight operational, as well as
wireless support through ndiswrapper. on monday evening i booted up
and found the keyboard didn't work in X (more specifically, in KDM) or
at the console (ttyX). rebooting with a USB keyboard attached didn't
help.

i booted into Ubuntu Live CD 5.1 and commented out the following lines:
   /etc/modules :
       ndiswrapper
       sbs
       applesmc
   /etc/modprobe.d/appletouch :
       options usbhid pb_fnmod=2
   /etc/modprobe.d/ndiswrapper :
       alias wlan0 ndiswrapper

when i rebooted, the keyboard worked properly in KDM and the consoles.
i uncommented "options usbhid pb_fnmode=2" because i like my F-keys to
work without the Function key, rebooted, and found that they keyboard
no longer worked in KDM or the consoles. i went back into Ubuntu Live,
commented out that the pb_fnmode line, rebooted, and they keyboard's
back to normal.

the thing is, i've been using the pb_fnmode option for a week. why
would it all of a sudden cause this problem? clearly, something else
must have triggered this that i'm unaware of. any thoughts at all
would be great!

for now, i'm just doing this to get my F-keys to work the way i like'em:
   echo -n 2 >/sys/module/usbhid/parameters/pb_fnmode

cheers,
Nick
