What version of xorg are you running? I've been fighting with xorg 6.9 for a couple of days now, and I simply cannot get the ATI drivers (latest, 8.34.2 I believe) to work. I am running a patched 2.6.20 kernel, and fglrx.ko loads with no problems. I'm getting an error in the xorg log saying that the x fglrx module is failing a "RegisterResource" call, and the a setVBEMode failed error, then x exits saying that screens were found, but none had a usable configuration.
This is on a mbp 17 (original coreduo) with Slackware 11 installed. If anyone has ideas or solutions, please let me know.
