I won't blame ATI in my case... Both fans turn exactly at the same speed
(CPU and GPU fan, and I assume they are the same model), and I wasn't
using the graphics card very intensively...

I got my Macbook Pro in April 2006, the fan started making noise in
August 2006, but only intermittently. The fan stopped working around
October 2006 (=no noise anymore, and applesmc reporting 0 for
fan1_current_speed... but I couldn't send my Macbook Pro in warranty as
I badly needed it), I used it for abt 2 months with one fan working
(throttling down the CPU and the GPU, and putting a laptop cooler below
it...)... Got it repaired in December 2006.
