I wrote my last email before seeing this response of yours. Perhaps this result of yours verifies Marios hypothesis that OS X configures the SMC at boot time and then just leaves it that way. When you say booted OS X and then returned to Linux did you mean started OS X and then rebooted into linux or switched off and then returned to Linux?
