the ati driver provided with xorg only works with ati chipsets up to
r3xx, and all of the radeons of the X1k series are r4xx or r5xx I think,
so it really shouldn't work I think.

I don't know of any reasons why the VESA driver wouldn't work with
that resolution, but the largest monitor I own is 17" :P

Well, as much as I hate advising people to use proprietary software,
I think that in this case this would probably be your best bet. Try
RedHat's support forums to see if anyone has the driver pre-packaged
for you or something like that.
