I mean that X is *not* supposed to automatically pick up new devices by
chance. A resume basically re-adds all devices. So your hotplug system
(udev, hal) should post a org.x.config.input.add message to dbus. This
way X will pick up the device correctly.

hi Ortwin. would you mind being more specific please? there's very little
information on "org.x.config.input.add"; googling for it comes up with only
2 results. i've followed the instructions on your site to have X use
/dev/input/touchpad which is setup as a symlink to the proper input device.
however, upon resuming, X is unable to open /dev/input/touchpad , and thus
synaptics isn't used:
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~> grep -i -e synaptics -e touchpad /var/log/Xorg.0.log | tail
(**) Synaptics Touchpad: always reports core events
(II) XINPUT: Adding extended input device "Synaptics Touchpad" (type: MOUSE)
Synaptics DeviceInit called
SynapticsCtrl called.
Synaptics DeviceOn called
(--) Synaptics Touchpad touchpad found
Synaptics DeviceOff called
Synaptics DeviceOn called
(EE) xf86OpenSerial: Cannot open device /dev/input/touchpad
(WW) Synaptics Touchpad: cannot open input device
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~>
any help would be greatly appreciated. cheers,
Nick
