I remember there were cases where VideoRam was simply ignored,
dunno if this might be the case. Perhaps you should report this to
the X.org mailing lists ?

the legacy driver, if I'm not mistaken, is the last one that worked
with old cards like the Riva TNT2 and stuff. It really shouldn't work
with any of the newer cards.
Does the latest driver available on Nvidia's site lists the card as
being officially supported ?
