lirc 0.8.2 has native support for the Mac mini IR sensor. However, I
can not use it as I wasn't able to get a hiddev device node for it.
This is required by the macmini driver.

The author wrote that he used a learning remote and then reconfigured
the Apple IR to send different keycodes (you have to hold some special
keys for a while to reconfigure it). That way, he had a few codes for
the learning remote that he can use with the Apple IR sensor.
